Learning how to grow like a flower!

Relieve. Entertain. Rebuild.

Theatre Amoeba seeks to continue to improve life in the temporary barrack relocation camps in Aceh, Indonesia.  Theatre Amoeba is presently based in London with international members from Lebanon, USA, Spain, Indonesia, Japan and England.

The proposed project will bring members of Theatre Amoeba to Aceh, where they will run trauma healing theatre workshops using clown and storytelling while creating performances with and for children affected by the earthquake and tsunami of 2004.  Amoeba will also tour Rooftops expanding the performance to include local musicians and artists.  The total project will be carried out over 2 months.  Our program will continue our work from 2005 with new Aceh community groups as well as take special care and attention with Yayasan Lamjabat who has expressed a great interest and initiative to create an ongoing drama department within their school.

Yayasan Lamjabat worked extensively with Amoeba.  Together we performed for more than 100 children and families at Save the Children’s Indonesian Children’s day festival. Our original show “Mimpi Indah” (Sweet dreams) included 30 children performers from The Lamjabat Foundation, where we ran workshops using creative movement and drama for over 100  teachers and students.  Please read our letter of invitation from Linda North and Yayasan Lamjabat.

  3. To give the teachers the tools and motivation to teach creatively through drama throughout their curriculum .
  4. To relieve anguish through creative expression while both educating and entertaining children through physical creation workshops and performances .
  5. To collaborate artistically with the Aceh adult and youth theatres (through cultural exchange, direction and teaching), to encourage leadership and team-work while providing them with the tools to continue the workshops after Amoeba’s departure.
  6. To document our journey with hopes of a  continuation of this project in the future.

Project structure

  • Workshops with children aged 8-12. Lamjabat is working with over 100 children. Theatre Amoeba will run a series of workshops in collaboration with local artists for groups of 20 children. The groups will present to each other as well as the local community.
  • Workshops with young adults.  Amoeba will work with a group of young adults in developing their own performance.  We will also work with teen mentors during the children’s workshops to develop their leadership skills.
  • Teacher Training.  Amoeba works together with the strengths of the local teachers in the development of theatre programs. We train the teachers and finish with teacher performances for the children in their school.
  • Performances.  The members of Amoeba Theatre will perform an original show throughout Aceh.  These performances will be used to entertain and build interest in the workshops and evolve to incorporate new members of the community. The performances will be written in conjunction with community members to address themes of local interest.
