Free Scripts- Thirty Minutes or Longer

I have adapted or written the following longer scripts:  "A Midsummer Night's Dream" and "The Wizard of Oz" with the L2 learner as a priority.  The Wizard of Oz essentially is edited from the movie script.  In "A Midsummer Nights Dream" I tried to keep the cast size manageable and the language useful.  If you wish to use these scripts please send me a brief email telling me about your project (this is the honor system... because you could just download them).  I am very interested in hearing about your experiences with theatre and receiving post-production photos.  Presently, I am researching the educational value of learning English through a complete immersion in theatre as well as continuing as Artistic Director of Theatre Amoeba which produces, performs and runs professional workshops throughout the planet.  For Email

Shakespeare

A Midsummer Night's Dream:
Theseus, the duke of Athens, is preparing to marry Hippolyta .As he ponders how to spend the four days till his wedding, Theseus is interrupted by Egeus, an Athenian aristocrat, who has dragged his daughter Hermia into the court. Egeus wishes Hermia to marry the noble Demetrius, but she is in love with Lysander, a younger and poorer man. Theseus confirms that if Hermia does not obey her father's will the law of Athens requires that she be put to death. Lysander suggests to Hermia that they should escape to the forest, where the Athenian law cannot harm them.

Hermia talks their plan to her school friend Helena, who is herself in love with Demetrius. Helena is determined to reveal their scheme to Demetrius and Egeus. They all depart for the forest by night. Unbeknownst to the humans, the forest is home to a tribe of fairies, whose king and queen, Oberon and Titania, are fighting a bitter feud over a young Indian boy. To punish Titania, Oberon instructs his lieutenant Puck to cast a spell on her that will make her fall in love with the first creature she sees. Puck does so, and then bewitches Egeus who is looking for his daughter, planting a donkey's head on his shoulders. Titania sees him, and duly falls pray to Oberon's magic and finds herself in love with Egeus who is now a Donkey. Oberon, in the meantime, has spotted the human lovers wandering in the forest, and commands Puck to help them. Puck mistakes the man, and causes Lysander to fall in love with Helena. Chaos ensues, and it takes all of Oberon's magic and cunning to restore order to fairies and the lovers.

Why Perform?

The overall idea of my workshops is to take the learning process out of the school context and make the students experience that learning a foreign language can be approached through having fun. I wish to encourage the development of  English language skills through creative play - the aim is not grammatical perfection, rather it is aiming towards building confidence, a healthy and natural interest in learning, speaking and understanding the English language.

Wizard of Oz- 40 minutes

Wizard- 6 Characters (Short)

Wizard- 5 Characters (Short)

"A Midsummer Night's Dream" was adapted by Denise Rinehart and first performed at Seoul National University of Technology in 2004.  This adaptation runs under an hour.  For reasons of both clarity, time and number of participants I eliminated the Mechanicals.  Instead of Bottom changing form Hermia's father follows her into the woods and is transformed into an Ass. Read and enjoy.  If you choose to perform it please let me know about your experience.  Email theatreamoeba@hotmail.com.

The Wizard of Oz

Are you ready for a magical trip?  Dorothy and her dog Toto have been transported from her house by a tornado and sent to the Merry old land of Oz. All is fine and well in Oz except Dorothy just wishes to go
home. She discovers that to get home she will have to find her way to the magical Wizard of Oz. The path to him is the yellow brick road. Along her journey to the Wizard, she encounters a cowardly lion, a scarecrow, and a tin man. Each of these characters desires something for their life.

The lion desires courage, the tin man desires a heart, and the scarecrow desires a brain. They encounter two witches in Oz. One is the good witch of the East, the other is the wicked witch of the west.

But is this a real trip, or is it all a dream?
