What is The Theatre Amoeba Project?

The Theatre Amoeba Project aims to create community theatre and performative workshops that push boundaries of devised theatre, playwriting and production, while at the same time participates in the education of local communities. Amoeba seeks to engage in artistic integrity and excellence in all of its performance endeavors and is particularly interested in the relevance of performance to social and cultural concerns. We strive to explore these issues in theatrical form as well as in content with and for international communities.

Where does Amoeba work?

Every where.  Our volunteer projects to date include: Aceh, Indonesia; Seoul, South Korea; London, England; Manila, Philippines.

Movement in Morocco

Amoeba worked on a project called "Rooftops" followed by a short tour including Errachadia, Fez and Chefchaouen.  The Théâtre Appinumm du Maroc company  invited Theatre Amoeba to "The Theatrical days of Chefchaouen (JTC)" festival which began on August 1, 2007 in the north of Morocco (Chefchaouen).   This is an annual festival which encourages cultural and artistic exchanges between different civilizations. There were six creators involved in the project.

Prior to the festival Project Theatre Amoeba partnered with ASTVS for one month in July 2007 to teach theatre to local teens. ASTVS is a youth and non-profit making organization, situated in Errachidia, a city in the South-East of Morocco.

Our group was a flexible band of trained (MFA and MFA equivalent) talented acrobats, writers, musicians, mask makers and improvisers with experience training teachers, children, local community members and artists.  We came from South Korea, USA, Lebanon, England, Ireland and Spain.  Our future hope is to tour to Lebanon where we have an invitation to continue our performance and devising process in 2009.

Tsunami Theatre Aid 2005 (click and read more!)

Theatre Amoeba also lead a residency workshop in Aceh in which we performed and lead workshops for and with tsunami survivors in Indonesia.  Since our residency  the project we developed has continued.  One community of teachers and students that we helped to organize a small theatre group is presently performing an educational play throughout the devastated areas.

What are our future plans?

We are also preparing for our future projects in:

Lebanon 2009, "Clown and the Rednose", Lebanon 2010, "Shout it Outloud"

Aceh, Indonesia ongoing project “Tsunami Theatre Aid”

How does Amoeba fund the Amoeba Theatre Project?

We rely strictly on donations and fundraising.  Small NGO's often provide the necessities like food, logistical support and housing. Past and present project partners:

ASTVS is a youth and non-profit making organization which aims to bring under attention the poverty which is reality for a lot of people in the area and to create a common understanding amongst different cultures in the world.

Chashama is an American non-profit arts, tax-exempt, 501(c) (3) organization that provides opportunities for performing and visual artists since 1995, Chashama has provided artists with a home and the support resources necessary to present and create art that engages the community. For more information about Chashama visit their website at www.chashama.org

AMURT (Ananda Marga Universal Relief Team) was the first relief group to hit down and provide aid in Aceh, the northern most tip of Sumatra after the 2004 Tsunami. Founded in India in 1965, its original objective was to help meet the needs of victims of disasters that hit the Indian subcontinent. AMURT is a private voluntary relief organization and the only Eastern Asian relief group that exists.
