About Storytelling

Storytelling is one of our oldest art forms. Long before modern media entertained us storytelling was a common pastime, and a good storyteller was a valuable attribute to the community. Folktales and fables are one of the oldest educational tools through which cultures have passed down values and lore from one generation to the next.

Listening to stories can be a vivid creative experience. Most of a story told takes place in the imagination of the listener. Through the magic of language and the storyteller's skill, stories can come to life with landscapes and costumes as colorful and complex as the creative listener devises.

The Course
Storytelling is an exceptionally personal experience.  This course introduces the student to oral language patterns exposing students to a wide experience with spoken language, and leads the student to achieve success in reading.  It also develops the learner's listening skills.

In this course we will aim to share in the magic of listening, researching, creating and telling stories including audio listening and discussion.  Storytelling allows students to internalize important aspects of story beginnings and endings, settings, characters, and plot lines. It provides practice in expressing ideas in thought units, using colorful and descriptive language, developing ideas in sequence, and choosing effective action words.  

Students are also encouraged to experiment with voice, tone, eye-contact, gestures, and facial expressions. This lets them practice techniques for holding audience attention (Which can be very beneficial when in an interview and business meeting). Students will learn the basics of storytelling: how to select stories, research the history of both international and Korean Storytelling and then focus on techniques for learning those stories, (audience participation (response), volume, pitch, pacing, pauses, gestures, introductions, and endings.) They also examine examples of story sources and then choose one, learn and develop their listening and speaking fluency. In the end of the term students will have the chance to present their projects which may be independently written or adapted.
